What are the differences between AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality)?

Augmented reality, mixed reality or virtual reality… Even though these concepts have just entered our lives, it seems that they have managed to change our perception of "reality" extremely well. We often hear the names of these two concepts with the recent advancing technologies, but we may not be sufficiently aware of the differences between them. Although both are in our lives with the "reality" motive, they contain some differences on their basis. If you wish, let's first consider the concepts of virtual reality and augmented reality and then examine the differences.

What is Virtual Reality?

Simulation of real life with computer support; We call its artificial reconstruction virtual reality. In fact, the user has a completely virtual experience, but everything is so real that this reality phenomenon is intensely experienced visually and aurally. Let's explain with an example. You are in a huge canyon. There are a lot of different things around you; grandeur, infinity, colors and more. You will touch the clouds if you lie down. Even though all these things are virtual, the feeling it gives you is real. This is what we call virtual reality itself. This special environment created through software creates the real feeling for you with suitable hardware.

What is Augmented Reality?

Now double everything you think about virtual reality and experience virtual images created in real environment! Augmented reality is basically created by blending the real world and computer graphics. In other words, instead of a completely virtual environment, the real world and the digital world coexist. Augmented reality and virtual reality are intertwined.  Everything is real, but a virtual environment at the same time. Augmented reality and virtual reality overlap, but there are certain differences. Although the common denominator of both is reality, both in terms of terms and what they offer, there are tiny nuances among themselves. Now let's examine these differences.

Differences between augmented reality and virtual reality

  • Virtual reality offers an experience completely isolated from life. It is not about the real world and the real environment. Augmented reality integrates into real life and is more interactive.
  •  You touch the real world in augmented reality. The world you are in is real, even with virtual add-ons. In virtual reality, you are completely detached from real life and live in a completely virtual world.
  • The environment you live in in virtual reality is completely simulated and recreated. It is an environment that does not really exist. In augmented reality, on the other hand, the virtual environment does not go above the reality. So everything is built on the real environment.
  • Augmented reality can be used as if it were a mobile application. For virtual reality, on the other hand, you need a wide range of glasses that cover your whole viewpoint and can control what you hear.
  • The superior form of augmented reality is called mixed reality. Microsoft's mixed reality glasses are Hololens.

Virtual reality and augmented reality are also in our lives in many projects. Although it is thought only for entertainment, it is actually used in many areas.
